We have followed the optical development of Nova Cygni 1992 using the OSU CCD spectrograph on the Perkins 1.8-m telescope of the Ohio Wesleyan and Ohio State Universities at the Lowell Observatory. Spectra were obtained on a weekly basis starting four days after the discovery continuing through June, and at monthly intervals thereafter. Our spectra covered the wavelength range from 3300 Angstroms to 8500 Angstroms with the most consistant coverage from 4500 Angstroms to 5700 Angstroms. Our earliest spectra exhibited emission lines from the H Balmer series and Fe II with weak P-Cygni absorption profiles typical of the early phases of a nova outburst. He II 4686 Angstroms first appeared as part of a blend with N III 4640 Angstroms on March 10. [O III] 5007 Angstroms had emerged from Fe II 5018 Angstroms by April 22. [Ne III] 3869 Angstroms and 3968 Angstroms have been present and strong in the spectra since May 11. Since mid May forbidden emission lines of {O I}, {O II}, {O III}, Ne III, Ne IV, and permitted lines of the H Balmer series, He I, He II, C III, and N III have dominated the spectra. Complementary higher resolution spectra (0.7 Angstroms to 2 Angstroms) have also been obtained in an effort to understand the radial structure of the ejected shell. Profiles of the permitted and forbidden emission lines all display very similar structure. Comparisons with high resolution UV spectra will be presented.
