A preliminary trigonometric parallax for the very cool star ESO 207--61 places it at a distance of approximately 16 pc, and confirms its suspected low luminosity. From our parallax and published photometry we estimate its visual absolute magnitude to be 19.47, that is about 0.1 mag fainter than LHS 2924. ESO 207-61 (alpha = 7(h) 06(m) , delta = -48deg 56' [1950]) was identified in a faint proper motion star search program by Ruiz, Takamiya, and Roth (ApJ 367, L59, 1991). Its spectrum resembles that of LHS 2924 (M9). Based on the similarity to LHS 2924 they estimated a distance of 15 pc and a visual absolute magnitude of 19.5. The astrometric data is being acquired at Siding Spring Observatory with the 1 meter reflector and GEC 8603 CCD in the I band. This research is supported by the National Science Foundation, Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories, and the Estate of Leander J. McCormick.
