This paper gives a brief sketch of the current state of affairs in research into the origins of the stellar initial mass function. The likely origin of the IMF in the distribution of mass amongst dense cores in star forming regions is discussed, touching upon evidence from observations and predictions from theory. The possibilities for variations in the IMF in extreme environments are also outlined.
