The recent GALEX ultraviolet data have revealed that giant elliptical galaxies are still forming stars. Up to half of the nearby bright ellipticals have been found to show an unexpectedly-strong UV flux, which is most naturally explained by a minor level of residual star formation. This is consistent with the prediction from hierarchical merger models with a strong feedback. The residual star formation is more often found among the galaxies with a lower velocity dispersion and with a lower local density.
