The only method to estimate pulsar ages, in the absence of additional constraints from the companion or remnant, has been to calculate the "characteristic or spin-down age". Whilst the spin-down age may give realistic values for normal pulsars, it can fail for pulsars with very short periods due to a multitude of factors.
We show that this generic method can significantly be improved to achieve estimates closer to the true age as the spin-down age may over- or under-estimate the age of the millisecond pulsar by more than a factor of 10. Here, we propose a new method to estimate millisecond pulsar ages that parametrically incorporates evolutionary constraints and relevant physics limiting the two main observables, ie. P-Pdot. We will elaborate on this new technique, the implications and potential solutions it offers to long lasting fundamental problems regarding millisecond pulsar evolution and the underlying age distribution.
