Interplanetary Physics: Coronal Mass Ejections (7513)
Scientific paper
For the first time, NASA is preparing to launch twin spacecrafts designed to observe the Sun and solar wind in three-dimensions. The Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) mission, scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., on 31 August, will not only study the beginning, evolution, and outcome of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), but will detect any events that could potentially harm astronauts in space, disturb orbiting satellites, or instigate communications and power failures on the ground.
