The only surviving information about the mesoscopic early universe - causal processes and energy flows at temperatures above about 1 TeV and on scales smaller than a millimetre - may come from gravitational-wave backgrounds. The frequency and sensitivity of LISA are well matched to backgrounds produced by violent symmetry breaking at temperatures of 1-1000 TeV, which might be associated with the formation of our three-dimensional brane within a 10-dimensional space.
