The SDSS-II supernova search is delivering a thousand good supernova candidates per season, but only a fraction of these can be followed spectroscopically with current resources. The main goal of the program is focused on accumulating many normal type Ia selected by multi-color photometry. Here we propose to identify and study peculiar type Ia and plateau type II (type II-P) events that are currently tossed aside by the SDSS-II search. Odd type Ia events are critical to understanding the explosion mechanism and progenitors of thermonuclear supernovae. Plateau type II supernovae are excellent distance indicators that provide an important check on the systematics of the type Ia method. Last season the SDSS-II search did find a few type II-P and rare, peculiar type Ia events demonstrating that they are in the database. But most were lost due to lack of spectroscopy resources specifically aimed at their study.
