The majority of massive galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5 are detected in deep 24um observations, indicating emission from intense obscured star formation, obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN), or both. In stark contrast, at z < 1 massive galaxies are primarily ``red and dead'', indicating 1.5 < z < 2.5 as a major epoch of massive galaxy formation. However, the biggest caveat in understanding the implications of the 24um data are the large uncertainties in converting the observed 24um flux to total IR luminosities and star formation rates (SFRs), especially for z > 1.5. This results primarily from poorly constrained bolometric-corrections, because redshift estimates for the vast majority of 24um-detected galaxies at z > 1.5 are uncertain. We propose to use GNIRS on Gemini South to study 20 galaxies detected at 24um with photometric redshifts 1.5 < z < 2.5, K(AB) < 22 mag, and R(AB) > 24.5. After measuring precise redshifts, we will characterize the bolometric emission from galaxies in their most active stages. Furthermore, with the rest-frame optical spectra we will derive SFRs from Halpha, metallicities from [NII]/Halpha, and for some galaxies AGN spectral diagnostics. Our targets are in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South and our study will therefore have a lasting legacy for studying high-redshift galaxies in IR-active stages of their evolution.
