Recent studies of the radial abundance gradient among old (≥1 Gyr) populations of the Galactic disk have shown evidence for a change in the abundance trend at galactocentric distance R_gc 10 kpc, as first proposed by Twarog et al. (1997). Here the gradient in [Fe/H] with distance appears to vanish, with abundances of stars at greater distances attaining a ``basement" value of -0.5. Also, [(alpha)/Fe] values appear enhanced relative to the solar value for R_gc≥10 kpc. This implies that the outer disk has undergone a different star formation history than the inner disk. However, chemical abundances of a great many more clusters at this crucial transition region R_gc$ 9-12 kpc must be determined to characterize the nature of this transition from inner to outer disk. We propose to make a detailed abundance survey of several open clusters in this region to do just that. We will undertake observations of a large sample of open clusters, primarily through IU access time at the WIYN 3.5m telescope. Here we request CTIO-Hydra and MMT Hectochelle time to obtain observations of 2 southern hemisphere clusters and of 2 of the faintest clusters in our sample.
