We propose to use the KPNO 2.1meter telescope to observe optical counterparts of 16 X-ray cluster candidates detected serendipitously in Chandra fields that lack deep optical coverage. Our deep r'-, i'-, and z'-band imaging will allow us to determine the nature of the extended X-ray sources and measure cluster redshifts to z~ 1.1 using the location of the early-type cluster galaxy red-sequence in the color-magnitude plane. In addition, we will measure the cluster luminosity function, optical richness, color- magnitude relation, and correlations between optical and X-ray properties. By contrasting cluster attributes we will increase our understanding of cluster evolution over a large range in redshift.
