Observations of gravitational and electrodynamic processes in planetary rings are discussed in terms of their theoretical significance, emphasizing Voyager observations of Jupiter and Saturn. The findings obtained by observing stellar occlusions by the rings are reviewed. The use of the rings to study meteoritic impacts on the gaseous planets is addressed, and the interaction of rings and planetary atmospheres is considered.
