The performance requirements for underground detection of neutrino (numu/nu sub e) oscillation in cosmic-ray experiments are analyzed, taking the uncertainties due to flux calculations, geomagnetic effects, and propagation through matter into account. Monte Carlo computations are performed for the case of the monopole, astrophysics, and cosmic-ray observatory (MACRO) proposed for Gran Sasso Laboratory, and the results are presented in graphs and characterized. It is found that a Delta (m squared) limit of about 0.0001 could be obtained in a reasonable length of observing time using a MACRO-type detector, but that mixing angles with sin sq 2 theta less than about 0.2 are not experimentally obtainable.
