The effect of shocking at pressures in the 100-200 GPa range on single crystal olivine is investigated. The specimens were oriented normal to (100), one normal to (010), and one normal to the bisector of these two directions. A series of shock transit time measurements obtained using shorting pin detectors is presented. The flyer plate, shock, and particle velocities, and Hugoniot states are evaluated. The Hugoniot data reveal that shock density is not a function of crystal orientation, and the softening of the Hugoniots is observed at about 150 GPa. The experimental data are compared with the forsterite data of Watt and Ahrens (1983); explanations for the noncorrelation of the data are provided.
