The use of spaceborne accelerometers for gravity gradiometry is described. The tensor of the second derivatives of the gravitational potential is measured by arranging the accelerometers so that they form a simple geometric figure centered at point 0 (which is not necessarily identical to the center of mass of the satellite). With four instruments, when residual velocities are zero, and the accelerometers form a perfectly regular square, accuracy is limited only by measurement quality. Since only differential measurements are used, systematic errors in sensitivity directly affect gradient measurements. Scale factor matching of the accelerometers is required, given a 0.1 Eotvos resolution specification for 300 km altitude.
