Spectroscopic observations of extended nebulae surrounding the quasars 3C 273, 3C 206, and 3C 48 are briefly reviewed. No clear conclusions can be made concerning the nature of these nebulae. From the data it is impossible to say whether a quasar is an active nucleus in an ordinary giant stellar system or whether a quasar is produced only at early stages of galaxy formation. It is not known what fraction of the nebula mass is made up of stars, or even whether stars are present in the nebula at all. It is only clear that there is a large quantity of excited gas in a quasar nebula and that this gas is in an unstable state.
