The temperature and O/N2 ratio are retrieved accurately from density scale height measurements (H-rho) obtained from Castor-satellite microaccelerometer data in the tropical and equatorial regions near a sunspot minimum between 1975 and 1977. Strong H-rho oscillations, corresponding to thermopause temperature variations up to 300 K, are explained by diurnal tides and planetary waves. Southern Hemisphere temperatures are found to be generally higher than those in the Northern Hemisphere, and a semiannual variation of the O/N2 ratio is noted, with maximum values around the equinoxes. Correlations with ionospheric parameters and neutral wind patterns are also considered.
