Very high energy (GeV to TeV) γ-ray observations provide a new spectral window on high energy astrophysical phenomena. VHE gamma-ray observations of the BL Lacs Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 have provided new information about the nature of the relativistic jets in these objects and the origin of the nonthermal emission. These sources also provide probes of the radiation fields in the nuclear region of these active galaxies and in intergalactic space. Observations of sub-hour-scale TeV, flares provide constraints on the emission mechanism, and on any energy dependent dispersion in the velocity of light. This paper summarizes the status of VHE γ-ray observations of blazars and highlights some of the most important recent measurements. .
