Observations of the F-region plasma drift velocities obtained by a spaced receiver system at the polar station Ny-Alesund, Svalbard (75 deg 4 min North geomagnetic latitude) show a large degree of congruence from one day to the next and from one year to another (1975 and 1982). The average drift patterns deduced from the composed data sets are in good qualitative agreement with recent models of the polar cap and auroral zone convection pattern. It is argued that in spite of the methodological difficulties recognized with the spaced receiver technique, the high concordance of the data with results from more sophisticated methods lends support to the reliability of this technique. An array of spaced receivers should, therefore, be established in the polar cap in order to survey the ionospheric convection to complement the more sophisticated and expensive methods like satellite and incoherent scatter radar measurements.
