The responses of the three-dimensional electric current system in the auroral oval which couples the magnetosphere to the ionosphere to magnetic substorms and changes in the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field are investigated. Configurations of the auroral electrojets and the downward field-aligned currents across the noon sector that feed them were determined using data from the Alberta array during isolated substorm onsets in the midnight sector identified on Scandivanian magnetometer data. Southward turnings of the IMF are found to be accompanied by slow intensification of the auroral electrojets and the field-aligned current and weak substorm activity in the midnight sector, while northward turnings produce marked increases in electrojet and field-aligned current intensity and strong substorm activity. Observations are explained by the direct supply of energy to the electrojet currents from the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction in the case of a southward IMF, and energy supply from the diversion of the tail current into the ring current in the case of a northward IMF.
