A hypothesis similar to Fick's diffusion law is used to obtain a simple formula for the enhanced vertical transport of energy due to irregular convective motions. The results are compared with those obtained by using classical expressions and experimental data on the 557.7 nm airglow line and it is shown that the proposed formula is an approximate but effective expression. The use of the simplified equation is recommended in cases when detailed information on gravity waves or turbulence is not available.
