The paper deals with the properties of the solar corona and the techniques by which they have been observed. The corona is treated, in general, as a spherically symmetric stationary gas. This model, although admittedly unrealistic, has a certain right to exist if it is considered as an average model (corresponding to a lower resolution or to a greater distance to the sun). Particular attention is given to the problem of coronal heating and to the solar wind.
