ESO's New Technology Telescope (NTT), which produced its first images in March 1989, is discussed. The operation of NTT and the development of its active optics are described. Novel features of the NTT operating system and the limits of the optical quality it can provide are addressed, and steps to be taken toward a fully automated correction system are discussed. The optical performance of the NTT thus far is reviewed and its implications for both earth-based and space-based telescopes of the future are considered.
