The paper is concerned with the use of sunlight scattered from noctilucent clouds to determine the sizes and shapes of the cloud particles. The characteristics of the clouds and of the atmosphere in which they form are described. Relevant polarization theory is examined, and polarization data are considered with attention to the information obtainable from circular polarization, linear polarization, and intensity calculations.
