We present the latest results from our studies of a subclass of transient X-ray sources, whose members display anomalously low peak luminosities of 1E34-1E36 erg/s (2-10 keV). A large fraction of these underluminous tranients is expected to harbor accreting neutron stars and black holes. However, some of these systems appear to have such anomalously low mass-accretion rates, that it might be challenging to explain their existence in terms of regular evolution paths and more exotic scenarios such as hydrogen-poor companions or brown dwarf or planetary donors might have to be invoked.
We study the outburst behavior of several transient systems near the Galactic Center with sensitive X-ray instruments like Chandra, XMM-Newton and Swift. We find a wide range in outburst durations and duty cycles and estimate long-term time-average accretion rates in the range of 1E-14 - 1E-11 Msun/yr for these systems. The underluminous X-ray transients probe parameter regimes previously unknown for compact objects and studying these systems in detail can provide an important contribution to our understanding of compact objects, accretion physics and binary evolution models.
