I will present results of recent statistical studies of the population of Ultraluminous X-ray sources including the outcome of a complete survey of 140 nearby galaxies. I will address the following questions about ULXs and their environments: Are ULXs associated with young star-forming regions and massive young clusters? What is the rate of ULXs? Do ULXs occur in the halos of galaxies? Do ULXs occur in dwarf galaxies? Is there an upper limit to the luminosity of ULXs?
