We analyse the effects of disc irradiation in post novae, where the accretion disc is strongly irradiated by the hot white dwarf. After the nova eruption, the white dwarf has to cool for up to ~100 yrs -- depending on the orbital period, the temperature of the white dwarf after the eruption, and the assumed efficiency of disc irradiation -- before the disc can begin producing dwarf nova outbursts. In addition, we find that the visual brightness of post novae gradually decreases after the nova explosion as a result of the decreasing disc irradiation from the continuously cooling white dwarf. The rate of decline that we derive is in good agreement with the observations.
