X 1705--440 is a neutron star X-ray transient which shows an unusually high degree of long term variability. We examine the lightcurve and compare it to a simple analytic form of the standard disc instability model, modified by irradiation. The X-ray lightcurve of X 1705--440 shows three clearly resolved decays which may be well modelled as an exponential followed by a linear decline. We use the decay rates to find a value for the disc radius. We hence find that a Roche lobe filling secondary must be evolved.
