In the framework of our BeppoSAX long-term X-ray monitoring, we report on a low state X-ray observation carried out in April 2001 and complemented by simultaneous optical photometry. AM Her was first active but rapidly went into a deep low state, indicating a decrease in the accretion rate by a factor of ~17 in less than one hour. The optical data show that the white dwarf remains still heated while accretion has already ceased.
