The main properties of stria-type bursts, frequency-split pairs, and type IIIb bursts are summarized. Observational results obtained over the frequency range from 20 to 30 MHz with high frequency and time resolution are reviewed. Attention is also given to observations of Y bursts, inverted Y bursts, and other hyperfine emission structures. Various theories on the generation of type IIIb bursts are examined, several frequency-splitting mechanisms are considered, and observational tests for verifying the theories are suggested. It is concluded that many of the observed properties of stria and type IIIb bursts can be explained in terms of narrow-band emission produced by fast electron fluxes as they traverse density inhomogeneities or shock fronts in the corona.
