A brief review is given of contemporary ideas on the nature of type II radio bursts and their relation to type III bursts. Data on two type II bursts that were detected shortly after flares occurred behind the solar limb are analyzed which indicate that type II bursts are most likely generated by flare-induced shock waves. Some characteristics of shock-wave propagation in the solar corona are discussed.
