Possible interpretations of the observed properties of meter-wavelength solar type I and type III radio bursts are discussed. It is confirmed that both types of burst are excited by fast electrons at nearly the same velocity, that the electrons responsible for type I bursts are entrapped in closed magnetic fields above sunspots, and that the electrons producing type III bursts freely propagate along open magnetic lines of force or high magnetic loops. Differences between the magnetic-field strengths in source regions of type I and type III bursts are shown not to be as significant as previously proposed; the magnetic-field strengths and electron densities in burst source regions are estimated. The results indicate that: (1) the magnetic flux density at a height of about 1.6 solar radii amounts to approximately 1 gauss for type I source regions and to no more than about 0.2 gauss for type III source regions, and (2) the electron densities in the type I and type III source regions are, respectively, about equal to and eight to 10 times higher than the electron density at the corresponding height in the quiet-time K corona.
