We describe an ongoing programme using the FORS1 spectropolarimeter on
the ESO-VLT to search for magnetic fields in Herbig Ae/Be stars. Our aim
is to identify the pre-Main Sequence progenitors of magnetic Ap stars,
and to trace the evolution of their magnetic fields at the earliest
possible stages.
