The location and nature of the clouds which cause absorption lines in the spectra of many high redshift QSOs remains controversial. Most statistical tests performed so far have been inconclusive, though there have been indications that the distribution of numbers of lines is not consistent with that expected from intervening galaxies. There also is a significant peak in numbers corresponding to a velocity difference between emission and absorption regions of about 0.1c. This type of behavior is consistent with radiation pressure driven outflow and 'line-locking', though it is difficult to understand theoretically how the latter mechanism can operate in QSOs.
