The phase and modulus of the apparent resistivity of the upper mantle beneath the northwest Atlantic have been calculated from available data for the time variation of the geomagnetic field. Using an ultramafic model of the upper mantle with a basalt melt in the asthenosphere the best fit to the inferred resistivity corresponds to a lithospheric thickness of 90 km and integrated conductivity of the asthenosphere of about 1.5 . 104 ω-1
