THE late E. A. Milne1 found a Newtonian analogue of a particular relativistic model of the expanding universe. He and I then showed2 that there are Newtonian analogues of all the pressure-free relativistic models and, moreover, that the equations describing their behaviour are formally identical with the relativistic equations. As we stated, there are differences regarding the interpretation of the equations. However, our view that the work helps in the physical understanding of the relativistic treatment has been borne out by subsequent developments. D. Layzer3 has recently criticized our work and asserts that ``it is incompatible with the Newtonian conception of gravitation which it tries to incorporate''. H. Bondi4 regards it as not strictly compatible with Newtonian dynamics; but he gives reasons for the results being nevertheless significant.
