The theory that the solar wind is made up of intertwined filamentary plasma elements with dimensions smaller than the diameter of the magnetosphere is considered, and it is suggested that these elements can dent the magnetopause, and that they can become partially engulfed in the magnetosphere. A number of magnetospheric observations are cited to support this penetration mechanism which does not rely on magnetic field merging.
