The paper is a review of the microscopic properties of the magnetopause in the context of the more general problem of topology of the magnetosphere and the physical processes involved in magnetospheric dynamics. Emphasis is on those aspects of the microstructure of the magnetopause that depend on either the presence of the interplanetary magnetic field or the interaction of the magnetopause with the ambient magnetospheric and ionospheric plasmas.
