Scientific paper

The papers in this collection report new observational data on the processes in the region near the plasmapause, in particular, data from the HEOS satellites, and also discuss new models of macroscopic and microscopic phenomena in the magnetosphere. Topics investigated include a survey of magnetotail boundary layer observations, the mechanism of plasma penetration and energetic electron escape across the dayside magnetopause, field-aligned distribution of plasma mantle and ionospheric plasmas, experiment on the interaction of a magnetized sphere with a supersonic plasma flow, and a static-state field-line reconnection model for the earth's magnetosphere.
