Parker has studied the problem of a force-free magnetic flux tube, part of which is expanded by external forces. For two special magnetic field distributions he has shown that the twist will increase in the expanded section. In this paper Parker's result is generalized. It is demonstrated that expansion of part of a force-free magnetic flux tube will lead to twist transport into the expanded section if the longitudinal component of the magnetic field in the undisturbed flux tube increases toward the center of the flux tube. It is proposed to check the observational evidence as to whether this twist mechanism causes the rotational motions observed in eruptive prominences.
