Polarization measurements reported elsewhere were interpreted in terms of Hanle effect theory, and the results were applied to the study of magnetic field orientation in quiescent prominences. It is shown that the magnetic field of the prominence is not vertical but is probably approximately horizontal. The problem of determining the angle between the line of sight and the lines of force assumed to be horizontal is examined. Three classes of prominences are distinguished, and the different orientation of the field lines of force for the three classes is explained. The study supports a previous finding that the direction of the field in the polar crown follows the 22-year cycle.
