Spectropolarimetric observations will be made of comet WKI over a wide range in phase angle, as well as comet Encke at high phase. The observations will be used to investigate the light scattering properties of cometary dust grains as a function of scattering angle and wavelength. These data can be compared to models and laboratory measurements of various materials to help determine their physical and chemical nature. These data will be free of contamination by molecular emission. Furthermore, the relation between the polarization and phase angle of the molecular bands, which differs from that of the grains, can be determined. These data will can be used to help correct future broad-band polarization measurements, and to provide additional information about the importance of fluorescence to the production of the various emission bands. After failure of first observations, additional ACQ image added and target changed to comet Mueller (1993p).
