The relaxation sounder uses the characteristics of radio wave propagation to provide accurate and reliable measurements of the electron density and magnetic field strength. It thus permits detailed studies of wave propagation and amplification mechanisms, and can be used for studies of magnetospheric plasmas. The results presented in the present paper confirm that the nightside sector responds immediately to increased magnetic activity; the enhancement of the convection field digs out the plasmasphere, so that the plasmapause gets much closer to the earth (below L equals 4). The behavior of the dayside sector is delayed in time with respect to the onset of perturbation. Any analysis of this sector must be linked to the conditions in the nightside sector.
