I note with interest the additional information by Feldstein and Yevlashin [this issue] on Russian contributions in upper atmospheric physics during the International Geophysical Year (IGY). Many readers may welcome this information because Russian scientific literature often is difficult for scientists who do not read Russian, or is not available. Many of these Russian contributions were described in my earlier papers [Schröder, 1975, 1984, 1998; Gadsden and Schröder, 1989]. For those scientists who understand Russian, publications and results from Russian scientists related to research undertaken during the IGY are more familiar. Because of limited space, my recent Eos article only offered examples of some of the people involved in research during the IGY.
