The physical implications of a rapidly time-varying H20 maser source in W3(OH) are discussed, using collisional and radiation pump models. All the simple models require a large injection of energy (approximately 10 to the 39th power to 10 to the 41st power ergs) into a cloud of dimension of the order of 10 to the 14th power to 10 to the 15th power cm in a time of the order of a few days. The models also require higher opacities for the gas than are commonly assumed, which suggests that, in addition to the dust component, there is also a rich mixture of molecules in the gas.
