Interferometry allows a direct determination of asteroid sizes and shapes to be performed. This is crucial to study interesting cases for which other techniques, such as radar, adaptive optics, polarimetry, and infrared radiometry, while unveiling peculiar shapes and exotic surface properties, do not allow a complete model of the objects to be built. For instance, even for large main-belt asteroids important ambiguities remain concerning their possible binarities and surface thermal properties.
We present results of the first successful interferometric observations of asteroids with the Mid Infrared Interferometric Instrument (MIDI) at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) of the European Southern Observatory.
