Observations of oceanic short-period internal waves by MERIS in Full Resolution Level 1b mode are presented and we investigate the capability of the sensor to observe marine film slicks and small scale processes. The radiometric resolution of MERIS imagery is shown to be capable for detection of IWs across the entire swath width of the FR Mode, including for moderate wind speed conditions. It is the first time that a large swath width sensor is capable of detecting small scale phenomena such as this. Discussion of different mechanisms by which internal waves can be imaged is presented, as well as the potential advantages of the MERIS/ASAR data synergy.
