Theoretical estimates are presented of interference produced in gravitational-wave detectors by static gravitational field gradients. It is shown that gradient-associated noise in heterodyne detectors is of the same order of magnitude as the signal to be detected. It is recommended that antenna orientations be optimized with respect to static field gradients and gravitational-wave sources.
