The observational history of the Andromeda galaxy is discussed with
attention to Baade's discoveries. The contributions of Roberts, Bajaja
and Berkhuijsen in studies of neutral hydrogen are noted. Current work
on planetary nebulas, hot gas clouds and carbon monoxide distribution is
catalogued and the spiral arm controversy is outlined.
