It is shown that the existence or absence of gravitational radiation from a spatially limited physical system can be determined and its magnitude calculated provided that the solution of Einstein's gravitational field equations obeys certain covariantly described boundary conditions. These boundary conditions are given on spacelike hypersurfaces, and space-times which satisfy them may be considered to be asymptotically flat.
